Sleep Disorders

Normal sleep varies between individuals but generally includes about six to nine hours of uninterrupted rest which leaves a person refreshed upon awakening. Sleep disorders include anything which disturbs normal sleep.

What Is Sleep Apnea?

Sleep apnea is a disorder that affects more than 12 million people in the United States. People with sleep apnea literally stop breathing repeatedly during their sleep often for a minute or longer and as many as hundreds of times during the night. Sleep apnea can be caused by either complete or partial obstruction of the airway, both of which can cause awakenings. These microarousals from sleep may be very brief and not remembered in the morning, but they are the reason that deeper, restorative sleep isn't reached. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) occurs in approximately 2% of women and 4% of men over the age of 35, with increasing percentages as we get older.
